Kanungu Man Hacked to Death After Injuring Goats
Police in Kanungu District are investigating a case of murder after a 30-year-old man was killed in a mob justice incident on September 14, 2025, following accusations of injuring goats belonging to a resident.
The deceased has been identified as Sorobina Kabangari, a peasant farmer and resident of Kyambeya Cell, Muramba Parish in Mpungu Sub-county.
According to police, Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the incident began when Twinomugisha Edisa reported to the area LC II chairperson, Kahunyira Nado, that Kabangari had injured her two goats.
The chairperson, together with some locals, arrested Kabangari, who confessed to the act. He was tied with a rope and escorted toward Mpungu Police Station.
However, on the way, near the home of one Bagyenyi, Kabangari claimed that it was Bagyenyi who had given him the panga used to injure the goats. This infuriated Bagyenyi, who allegedly picked up a panga and struck Kabangari several times on the head, killing him instantly.
Police said the scene was documented, and Kabangari’s body was taken to Mpungu Health Centre IV for postmortem examination.
The LC II chairperson, Kahunyira Nado, has since been arrested to assist with investigations, while the key suspect, Bagyenyi, fled the area and is currently on the run.
Maate condemned the act, warning communities against taking the law into their own hands.
