Kamuli Police Officer Arrested Over Fatal Shooting During Arrest

The territorial police in Kamuli have arrested a police officer, identified as No. 38057 Sgt. Etapu Jimmy, attached to Balawoli Police Post, for allegedly causing the death of a 19-year-old man during an arrest.

The deceased has been identified as Kawongolo Diliisa, a resident of Butalage II, Kawaaga, Balawoli Town Council, Kamuli District.

According to ASP Kasadha Michael, the Regional Spokesperson for Busoga North, preliminary investigations suggest that on February 17, 2025, at around 4:00 AM, the officer booked out to arrest a suspect, Badaaza Joseph, on allegations of assault in Butalage II Zone, Balawoli Town Council, Kamuli District.

However, during the arrest, the suspect raised an alarm, and a scuffle ensued as bystanders attempted to rescue him. In response, the Officer in Charge (OC) fired two bullets in self-defence, and a stray bullet struck Kawongolo Diliisa, the suspect’s brother.

The victim was rushed to Kamuli General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and a postmortem examination is yet to be conducted.
