Kabale Municipal Commercial Officer arrested for Fraud

The Kabale police have arrested Federisi Akankwasa, the municipality commercial officer, from his hideout on charges of obtaining money by false pretence. Akankwasa, who was on the police wanted list, was also arrested for issuing a bounced cheque of 49 million Uganda shillings (UGX) to Leo Mbabazi, a resident of Kigongi B” Cell, Central Ward/Division, Kabale Municipality/District.

The allegations against Akankwasa involve the sale of an estate in Kakoba, Mbarara City, to the complainant in December 2022. The agreed-upon price was 550 million UGX, and a deposit of 100 million UGX was made. However, it is claimed that Akankwasa later resold the same land to another individual, informing the original buyer that the property was no longer available.

Instead of refunding the complainant’s 100 million UGX deposit, Akankwasa reportedly repaid only 50,250,000 UGX, leaving a balance of 49 million UGX. A subsequent bank cheque issued by Akankwasa in February 2023 bounced, leading to he filing of a case on March 13, 2023, in Kabale.

ASP Maate Elly stated that the suspect had been in hiding since the report was filed but was eventually arrested in Kabale yesterday. Upon completion of the ongoing inquiries, Akankwasa will be presented before the courts to face charges related to the alleged fraudulent activities.
