Internal Affairs driver kills traffic cop, pedestrian in Lira

The police at Lira-City CPS are investigating circumstances under which a driver of a vehicle belonging to the Ministry of Internal Affairs knocked and killed two people, including a traffic police officer.

The deceased have been identified as PC Muhindo Micah a police officer attached to the Lira-City CPS traffic department, and Akello Evester a 16year old student at Amach modern secondary school.

According to SP Patrick Jimmy Okema the North Kyoga regional PRO, the accident occurred on Thursday morning 15th Dec 2022 at around 7:00 hours.

It is alleged that the driver of Motor vehicle Reg No UG 0337G Ford Ranger double cabin blue in colour identified as Constable Driver Oginere John first knocked the rider of motorcycle Reg No UEU 841C at Adwila along the Lira Soroti highway.

He then lost control of the vehicle which veered off the road and knocked PC Muhindo dead. The officer was on official traffic duty. The driver also knocked three pedestrians, killing one and leaving the other two critically injured.

The injured persons have been identified as Ojok Bob a 34-year-old resident of Wiewot village Etam sub-county Amolatar district the motorcycle rider, Angullo Richard m/a 58yrs of Amaaci trading centre and Akidi Robby F/j 14yrs of Amach modern ss.

Okema says a team of traffic police officers from Lira CPS visited the scene and rushed the injured persons to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment where Akello was pronounced dead on arrival.

The two bodies have been conveyed to the mortuary pending postmortem.

The Motor vehicle and motorcycle are parked at Lira City CPS pending IOV inspection.

Okema says the driver is in custody.
