Since 2013, Ms. Agnes Kemigisa has been at the forefront of advocating for the respect of human rights, particularly focusing on the rights of women, political opponents, and the LGBTQ community. Her unwavering commitment to equality and justice has made her a prominent figure in Uganda’s human rights landscape.

One of her notable actions was publicly opposing the Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2014, which aimed to criminalize homosexuality and impose harsh penalties on LGBTQ individuals. Ms. Agnes Kemigisa vehemently spoke out against the draconian legislation, arguing that it violated fundamental human rights and promoted discrimination.

Furthermore, she has consistently opposed the death penalty, advocating for more humane approaches to justice and rehabilitation. Her efforts have sparked important conversations about the role of punishment in society and the need for a fair and equitable legal system.

Last week, Ms. Agnes Kemigisa met with US Ambassador Deborah Malac to discuss various issues, including tourism, women’s businesses, and respect of human rights. However, despite the diverse topics covered in their meeting, some locals viewed it through a different lens, perceiving it as a discussion focused solely on promoting homosexuality.

According to her Facebook account, Ms. Agnes Kemigisa clarified the nature of her meeting with Ambassador Malac, emphasizing the importance of tourism, economic empowerment for women, and the overarching goal of promoting human rights for all individuals. Despite her efforts to address misconceptions, the controversy surrounding the meeting underscores the challenges faced by human rights activists in Uganda.

Despite facing backlash and misinterpretation, Ms. Agnes Kemigisa remains resolute in her dedication to advancing human rights and fostering a more inclusive society. Her advocacy serves as a beacon of hope for marginalized communities and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice in Uganda.
