Heavy Rains Claim Lives of Two Children in Kampala, Cause Widespread Flooding

Heavy rains that hit Kampala on Wednesday morning claimed the lives of two juveniles who were found dead after their mother allegedly left them alone at night to fend for them. By the time the downpour began, she had not yet returned home.

According to Irene Nakasiita, the Spokesperson for the Uganda Red Cross, the tragic incident occurred in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto, a suburb of Kampala. Nakasiita stated that response teams were called in to support the community as severe flooding destroyed homes and household property.

“Our assessment team remains on the ground, working closely with local leaders and the police,” Nakasiita said, urging the public to remain vigilant and prioritize safety as the heavy rain season sets in.

The downpour also caused widespread flooding across the city, cutting off key access roads and leaving many residents stranded at home or on their way to work.

In response, the Uganda Police Force issued a public advisory on social media, warning motorists and pedestrians to avoid affected roads.

“Due to heavy rainfall this morning, the areas of Banda, Kyambogo, and Kinawataka (Katogo) have become impassable. Motorists are advised to use the Northern Bypass as an alternative route to avoid delays and inconveniences. Alternatively, please be patient and wait until the water subsides,” the statement read.

Police also reported that Bombo Road had been rendered impassable, advising motorists to use the Kasangati-Gayaza route instead.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging residents to take precautions as more rain is expected.
