Four Sironko District Sub-Counties Cut Off Stranded After Landslide

Four sub-counties in Sironko district have been cut off following the collapse of connecting ladders, destroyed by rolling stones triggered by landslides on Sunday. The affected areas include Butandinga, Buchabo, Bugitimwa sub-counties, and Butandinga town council.

The Works and Transport Ministry constructed Sigwa Metallic ladders in 2019 to facilitate access for people from three hard-to-reach sub-counties to the lower part of the district. Butandinga sub-county LC III Chairperson, Sunday Ezekiel Nabubolo, explained that the landslides were triggered by recent heavy rains in the area.

Nabubolo detailed that the rolling stones damaged the ladders, severing the connection between the four sub-counties. Currently, residents from upper Sironko are unable to access essential services such as schools, health centers, and markets in the lowlands.

He appealed for government intervention to replace the ladders, emphasizing their critical role as the sole connection to these remote areas. Budadiri East Member of Parliament, Isiah Sasaga Wanzira, stated that he has directed local leaders to compile a report and submit it to the district disaster management team before presenting it to parliament.

Wanzira urged residents to refrain from using the damaged ladders until they are repaired. Additionally, the landslides have caused destruction to crops such as coffee, maize, and bananas in villages including Maluku, Jewa, Gaboji, Gidega, Naludoyi, and Zebu in Butandinga sub-county.
