Five Injured as Religious Tensions Flare over Pork in Yumbe
Security agencies have restored calm in Yumbe Town following an outbreak of religious unrest reportedly incited by an individual identified as Kasimu, who was allegedly preaching against other faiths and mobilizing Muslim youth to attack establishments selling pork.
According to preliminary reports, the unrest escalated on Tuesday morning when a group of youth attacked the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC).
SP Asea Collins, the Regional PRO for North West Nile Region says the Police and Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel intervened to contain the situation and restore order.
During the confrontation, five people sustained injuries and were rushed to Yumbe Referral Hospital for treatment. One motorcycle was also set ablaze in the course of the disturbance, while the prime suspect linked to the violence has been arrested.
Security forces have intensified patrols in and around Yumbe Town to prevent further escalation, and urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as investigations continue.
