Bus Drivers Ordered to Obtain Mandatory Badges Ahead of Festive Season

As the country prepares for the festive season, bus drivers have been reminded of the mandatory requirement to obtain and carry driver’s badges issued by the Chief Licensing Officer, Ministry of Works and Transport. This is per Section 42(1)(e) of The Traffic & Road Safety Act (CAP. 347).

The directive was issued by SP Kananura Michael, the CLO-Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety. He warned that failure to comply with this regulation constitutes an offence punishable by imprisonment for up to seven years, as stipulated in Section 42(2) of The Traffic & Road Safety Act (CAP. 347).

“All bus drivers are hereby directed to collect their badges from the Ministry of Works and Transport. These badges are issued free of charge. Starting Wednesday, November 4, 2024, all bus drivers must possess a valid driver’s badge to pass any checkpoint with passengers. Any driver found without a valid badge will face legal action and be taken to court,” Kananura stated.

Every year, millions of Ugandans travel to their villages to celebrate Christmas with their families and friends. Buses remain the most popular mode of transportation for these large numbers of travellers.
