Building collapses killing homeless man in Lira
A homeless man has been killed by a building housing a lodge and several other businesses which collapsed in Lira city.
The deceased is Godfrey Otwii alias Ojuk, 40, a car washer who met his death on Wednesday morning. He has been spending the night at the verandah of blue Valley Guest house along Olwol road in Lira City together with street children.
The deceased’s body was recovered from the rabbles of the collapsed building together with his friend who escaped with minor injuries on the right thigh. Several items including cartons of salt, boxes of milk, treys of eggs, and chairs meant for sale were also destroyed.
According to Erick Okello, the manager of the entire building including Blue Valley Guest House, Otwii’s body was recovered after hours of searching when people realized that he was missing.
Okello blames the incident on the ongoing USMID road works on Olwol road.
He adds that the house has been helping not only staff but also businessmen who use some rooms as storage for their goods and street children who spend their nights under the packed sofas.
The North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema says investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
