Boda Boda Rider, Student Arrested for Illegal Wildlife Trade at Elegu Border
Authorities are holding two key suspects at the Elegu border police station in Amuru district for the alleged possession of a protected wildlife species, specifically a pangolin.
The suspects are Akur Moses, a 19-year-old South Sudanese student, and Alana Denis Patrick Oweka, a 21-year-old boda boda rider, both residents of Nimule in South Sudan.
According to ASP Ongom David Mudong, PRO Aswa West, on 23rd September 2024, at around 6:30 a.m., the OC CID of Elegu border police station received intelligence via a phone call reporting two individuals in possession of a pangolin and intending to sell it at Lubii Garden, Elegu Town Council in Amuru District.
A team of police detectives was dispatched to the scene and apprehended the suspects with the live pangolin. A case of possessing a protected wildlife species has been registered against them.
Ongom added that statements have been obtained from relevant sources. The living pangolin has been taken as evidence, and the Uganda Wildlife Authority has been notified to take custody of both the suspects and the exhibit as inquiries continue.
