Armed Thug Killed by Angry Mob in Rukungiri
The territorial police in Rukungiri are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a suspected robber from whom a gun was recovered.
It is alleged that on February 25, 2025, at around 8:30 pm, a responsible citizen informed the OC FFU (Operations) Rukungiri CPS, IP Tukamwesiga Nicholas, about a mob action at Butimba on Karegyesa Road, Rukungiri town, involving unidentified thugs armed with an AK-47.
ASP Maate Elly, PRO Kigezi says that their officers responded to the scene, where they found a body lying in a pool of blood alongside an AK-47 rifle.
The firearm, identified as UG POL 565810907-27608 and loaded with 28 rounds of ammunition, had been stolen from No. 70464 PC Adriko Benard on January 19, 2025, while he was on duty near Kabale University – Rukungiri Branch at Nyakaina Cell, Nyakaina Ward, Buyanja Town Council, Rukungiri district.
The deceased was identified as Akampurira Marc Kamp, a resident of Nyakina village, Buyanja sub-county, based on a copy of his National ID found in his wallet. The body was taken to Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Maate added that initial reports indicate that the two, armed thugs robbed Agaba Kenneth’s hardware shop of eight million Ugandan shillings at gunpoint, firing one shot but fortunately injuring no one.
As they attempted to flee, their gun jammed. Realizing the situation, local residents pursued them, capturing and lynching the one carrying the firearm, while the second suspect, reportedly the deceased’s brother, escaped and remains at large.
“I commend the bravery of the local residents and urge the public to continue providing timely information to aid in crime prevention and law enforcement. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts are underway to apprehend the second suspect and bring him to justice,” said Maate.
