Amazon Web Services Expands East African Reach with Nairobi Development Center

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the global cloud computing services leader, has inaugurated its second Development Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, on October 4th, 2023. This expansion marks a significant move for AWS, initially headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa, as it seeks to bolster its presence in the East African region.

With over 60% of the Kenyan population under the age of 25, AWS’s investment in Nairobi is welcomed with open arms. AWS has played a transformative role in supporting young people through initiatives like AWS Academy, equipping them with essential cloud computing skills and empowering them to venture into entrepreneurship.

Kenyan President William Ruto, present at the Development Centre’s launch, lauded AWS for its remarkable impact. He stated, “Young Africans are poised to drive unprecedented global growth. With the right investments, like Amazon’s, we can harness our continent’s natural resources and green energy potential to lead the world, offering opportunities, growth, and prosperity for a sustainable future.”

Uwem Ukpong, Vice President of Global Services at AWS, shared his enthusiasm, “We are thrilled to create high-tech job opportunities in Nairobi, tapping into the immense technical talent pool in Kenya. This move aligns with our commitment to support local communities while serving our global customers and partners.”

Amrote Abdella, General Manager of Sub-Saharan Africa at AWS, emphasized the importance of ongoing investment in the African continent. She stated, “Our investment in Cape Town paved the way for expansion across Africa. Development centres are instrumental in skills development and local recruitment, ensuring global customer support.”

Nairobi Governor Johnston Sakaja encouraged young people to seize the opportunities presented by AWS’s entry into East Africa. Notably, in May 2021, over 700 Kenyan students received advanced training in various technical fields, addressing the growing underemployment issue.

In collaboration with the Information Communication Technology (ICT) Authority, AWS plans to upskill 10,000 students using AWS Academy, aiming to tackle underemployment among Kenyan graduates and enhance their employability.

Robin Njiru, Public Sector Lead West, East & Central Africa at AWS, expressed enthusiasm, “This investment empowers local talent to impact global solutions and experiences. Our expanded presence in Kenya underscores the region’s exceptional skills and capabilities.”

Beyond Kenya, AWS has partnered with educational institutions in Rwanda and Uganda to provide cloud computing education to students. These initiatives are significantly benefiting disadvantaged youth and fostering positive change in their lives and communities.

In conclusion, AWS’s commitment to nurturing young talent in East Africa is driving meaningful change, offering the skills and resources needed for a brighter future.
