Accident in Luuka Claims Lives of Former MP Aspirant and Local Leader

The police in Luuka are investigating an accident that claimed the lives of Gladys Aliyinza, a 34-year-old former Luuka woman Member of Parliament aspirant, and Yusufu Biita, the Vice Chairman LC II Kirimwa Parish.

The duo was traveling in a silver-grey Isuzu double cabin, Reg No. UG4654C, which had a head-on collision with a sugarcane-loaded lorry, Reg No. UAU 073G. The incident occurred at Nawansega Cell, Nawansega Ward, Bukova Town Council in Luuka District.

It is reported that on Thursday, 27/06/2024, at around 04:30 pm, the truck, Reg No. UAU 073G, loaded with sugarcane from Kaliro side, was on a slope when it collided with the climbing double cabin Isuzu, Reg No. UG4654C, from the opposite direction before overturning several times.

According to ASP Kasadha Michael, the PRO Busoga North, at the point of collision, there is a slight bend that might have contributed to the crash. The impact at the scene suggests excessive speed was the likely cause of the accident.

While Biita died on the spot, there were attempts to save Aliyinza’s life, but she died on the way to Musana Hospital in Kaliro District.

Traffic police responded to the scene along with the district police commander. Biita Yusufu’s body was conveyed to Kiyunga Health Centre IV for postmortem, while Aliyinza’s body is at Musana Community Hospital.

Kasadha says the drivers of both vehicles are on the run. The hunt is on to apprehend them, and further inquiries are ongoing.
