Police release identities of 23 people who perished in Mbale Floods
Uganda Police Force has released the names of 23 people who perished in the Mbale floods over the weekend.
The region experienced heavy rains which led to the bursting of River Nabuyonga, causing flooding of Nabuyonga bridge located along Mbale-Kumi road in Mbale city in the night of 30th-31st July 2022.
The floods swept away three motor vehicles killing their occupants that were trying to cross the road.
Rogers Taitika the Elgon Region police spokesperson has identified the deceased, whose bodies have been retrieved as;
Khalayi Lukia 15yrs and Khalayi Barbra 11yrs both Pupils at NorthRoad Primary School in Mbale City.
Tamunoza Doreen 27yrs, a resident of Industrial Division Mbale City whose body was recovered from Toyota Wish reg No.UBH 060T.
Yadhi Farouk 32yrs, Businessman and resident of Somero Cell, Namataala Ward- Industrial Division – Mbale City, whose body was recovered from Nabuyonga River.
Nekesa Janet Diana 32yrs, resident of Bulolelo Village, Busoba S/C, Mbale District. Her body was recovered in river Nabuyonga from a Subaru Forester. REG No. UBL 465A.
Namara David 30yrs, a pump attendant at Oil Energy Fuel Station at Bungokho sub-county and resident of Nashikhaso Village, Bungokho sub-county in Mbale District.
Pte Chemendwa Sam, UPDF soldier attached to 3rd Division. He was on duty aboard a Boda Boda travelling from Bugema army Barracks to Military Police Barracks. He was swept by the floods together with the Boda rider near the URA checkpoint.
Masaba Ayub 28yrs, Boda boda rider and resident of Madenge Village, Mbale District. He was picked up by relatives from the river and taken directly home for burial.
Nabutanyi Sula 45yrs, Businessman and resident of Bunapongo Lower Village, Bumageni Parish Bungokho S/C Mbale District whose body was picked from Nashibiso river by relatives and who took it home directly.
Other victims are;
Mutebi Ronald 32yrs, Businessman and resident of Buloba-Wakiso District.
Ahebwa Edrine 34yrs, Procurement officer at UJJO Restaurant Nakasero and also a member of Power of Resurrection Church Mulago – Kampala. His body was taken to Kyegegwa for burial.
Nyiramutuzo Jenifer 32yrs, working with Human Rights Commission Kisasi – Kampala. Her body has been taken to Kisoro for burial.
Mugumya Edward 35yrs, Mechanic and resident of Kanyanya Centre, Komambogo Village, Komambogo Parish, Kawempe Division. His body has been taken to Wakiso.
Mulindwa Richard 36yrs, Mechanic and resident of Kiryankayego cell, Kabalungi Ward, Lwengo Town Council – Lwengo District. His body was taken to Wakiso.
Bossa Samuel 27yrs, Salesman with Laborex Uganda and resident of Mulago Kampala. His body was taken to Kisoro.
Sekatawa Stanley 42yrs, Businessman and resident of Mulago B- Kawempe Division. His body was taken to Mukono.
Nalubega Prossy 27yrs, Business lady and resident of Kisalosalo Village, Kyebando Parish – Kawempe Division. Her body was taken to Wakiso.
Bogere Zubairu Baligenda 48yrs, Businessman and resident of Namwigalo Cell, Najja Ward, Northern Division -Mbale City.
Bwogi Abdalahakim 30yrs, Businessman and resident of Kawempe Division – Kampala. Body taken to Butambala District.
The ten bodies were in Super Custom REG NO UAW 334X.
The other bodies that were retrieved include;
Mwangale Andrew 27yrs, was working with Baylor Uganda as a monitoring and evaluation officer. He was a resident of Budiba Village Mazimasa Parish – Butaleja District.
Masereka Alex 23yrs, resident of Mudodo Village-Sironko District. The body was taken to Mutufu in Sironko for burial.
Meanwhile, the bodies of two children were recovered from a pit on 01/08/2022 at around 1100hrs after their father Elias Nsolo 36yrs, a resident of Nkoma cell, Nkoma ward, Northern Division – Mbale City realized that they were missing. Their mother had gone to the hospital for antenatal.
Nsolo started looking for the girls only to find them dead in a pit containing water near the place they were playing at about 1700hrs. A report was made to the police and investigations were enhanced. Postmortem was carried out.
The girls have been identified as Nambozo Rena 06yrs and Nandi Jesca Patricia 04yrs.
Taitika confirms that the total number of people who died and bodies recovered were twenty-three (23) and that they have all been taken by relatives for burial.
