Police arrest nine thugs for possession of stolen items, narcotics
The police at Nansana has Saturday carried out an intelligence-led operation in areas of Nansana West 2A (Kibulooka) against organised criminal gangs of fraudsters dealing in fake minerals, electronic fraud and offensive communication.
The operation that occurred at around 1 am, follows an increase in cases of cyber-crime by fake telephone callers. The police arrested nine suspects and suspected stolen items were recovered.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire the Deputy PRO KMP, some of the items that were recovered include 24 suspected stolen phones, suspected fake minerals, and a laptop suspected to be used in cybercrime.
Other items are copies of the land sales agreement, Visa ATM card, marijuana and a list of people who are believed to be their victims.
Owoyesigyire says they have established that the scene of the crime was being used as a room for the gang to carry out hoax calls to unsuspecting victims.
“The suspects lure their victims into believing that such calls are from telecommunications companies like MTN, Airtel and different government institutions and departments before they ask for their financial details,” says Owoyesigyire.
He added that the phones recovered will be submitted to the Directorate of Forensic Services for analysis and we believe we shall be able to identify most victims.
The suspects are currently detained at Nansana Police Station on allegations of possession of suspected stolen items and possession of narcotic substances.
“We highly caution the public to remain vigilant as there is an increase in cases of cyber-crime by people who pretend to be from telecommunication networks,” he added.
