Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya re-arrested moments after release from Kigo prison
Men wearing black clothing, armed to the teeth have rearrested Kawempe North Member of Parliament Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya moments after he was released from Kigo prison.
Ssegirinya was taken by the same team that rearrested Makindye West MP Hon. Allan Ssewanyana last week, following his release from the same prison.
The duo is accused of masterminding machete killings in the greater Masaka sub-region. The MPs were given bail last week, but only Ssewanyana managed to get out. However, Ssegirinya remained in jail as one of his sureties and Mityana MP Francis Zaake did not appear in Court.
Earlier today, the International Crimes Division of the High court allowed an application seeking to replace Zaake with his Ntenjeru South counterpart, Patrick Nsanja Kayongo as Ssegirinya’s surety.
Ssegirinya’s lawyers Erias Lukwago and Shamim Malende went to High Court on Monday, seeking an order to substitute Zaake with Nsanja.
Their application received no objection from chief State attorney Lilian Alum Omara
In her ruling, presiding judge Suzan Okalany allowed the application and said Ssegirinya should be released as earlier ordered by the Masaka High Court.
No sooner had Ssegirinya stepped out of Kigo prison than a group of men dressed in black and armed took him away.
Earlier today, police spokesperson Fred Enanga revealed that Ssewanyana was arrested on fresh charges of treason. He is currently being held at PSU Kireka.
