One shot dead, two injured by NFA Guards in Mayuge District
One person has been shot dead following a scuffle between locals in Bugata village, Bumwena Parish, Malongo Sub-county, Mayuge District and guards from the National Forestry Authority (NFA) over a longstanding land dispute.
The incident happened on Monday, August 21, 2023, at 1:00 pm when one person identified as Ojangole Paul was shot dead and two others injured.
The injured were identified as Wanyala Syrus, 25 years old and Muyima, 25 years old.
James Mubi, the Kiira Region PRO, says that tensions have been escalating in the Bugata village area due to a prolonged land dispute between residents and the NFA.
He adds that this disagreement has caused friction for an extended period.
On Monday, it escalated, leading to a physical confrontation. Unfortunately, during the scuffle, the NFA guards reportedly opened fire, resulting in the tragic shooting of the three victims.
Police officers were informed and immediately visited the scene, led by the District Police Commander (DPC), Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations Department (OC CID), Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO), and their respective teams.
The body of the deceased, was transported to Mayuge Health Center 04 for post-mortem, while the two injured victims were rushed to Iganga Hospital for immediate medical attention.
Mubi says they have initiated Community policing efforts in Bugata village to prevent any further outbreaks of violence. Police also formally notified the NFA and is expected to cooperate in facilitating interviews with the guards involved in the incident.
