One child dead, over 100 others injured in Manafwa-Mbale road accident

There was panic in Manafwa District last night when a vehicle that was carrying pupils of Nakhupa Primary School was involved in an accident killing one child.

The incident happened at about 10:00 pm on Tuesday night at Kufu along Manafwa-Mbale Road, when a motor vehicle Reg UBJ 994J Tata Lorry belonging to Bukusu Corporative Enterprise Ltd lost control and overturned.

According to Sp Kananura Michael the PRO Traffic & Road Safety, the motor vehicle was speeding at the time of the accident.  

The pupil who died on the spot has been identified as Naminayi Thomas 16 years, while 117 others were injured and were all rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention.

The deceased’s body was taken to the same Hospital for postmortem, while the truck has been towed to Manafwa Police Station pending Inspection.

Police are now hunting for the driver who is on the run.

Kananura says the accident was likely caused by reckless driving, but investigations are ongoing.
