Papal Nuncio Emeritus Expresses Concern Over Negligent Priests

Archbishop Augustine Kasujja, Papal Nuncio Emeritus, has expressed concern over priests who neglect their duties. According to him, priests should remain committed to serving the faithful at all times, as per their ministry. However, many priests today spend time on their businesses outside pastoral work, which prevents them from fulfilling their role as ordained ministers.

Archbishop Kasujja made these remarks while delivering his homily at Our Lady of Fatima Queen of Peace Kasana Cathedral in Kasana-Luwero Diocese, where he presided over the Chrism Mass. More than 80 priests from the 21 Parishes across the Diocese participated in this special Mass during the Passion/Holy Week.

The Chrism Mass is usually presided over by a Bishop, but because Kasana-Luwero Diocese doesn’t have one, only a Diocesan Administrator, Msgr Francis Xavier Mpanga, Archbishop Kasujja was invited to officiate.

During the mass, Archbishop Kasujja also commended Kasana-Luwero Diocese for producing Archbishops, with the first being the late Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, who was the pioneer Bishop of Kasana-Luwero Diocese. He was elevated to Kampala Archdiocese in 2006. After him, Msgr Matthias Kanyerezi headed the Diocese between 2006 and 2008, until Msgr. Paul Ssemogerere was appointed second Bishop. Bishop Paul Ssemogerere led the Diocese for 13 years from 2008 to 2021 when he was elevated to Archbishop of Kampala.

Since then, the Diocese has been headed by Msgr Francis Xavier Mpanga from January 28, 2022, to the present. Archbishop Kasujja has promised prayers to the Lord to grant this Diocese a bishop, who will be its third.
