Bushenyi Councilors pass motion against promotion of LGBTQ+ Community activities

Councilors in Bushenyi district have passed a motion against the promotion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community activities in the district proposed by Ronald Atubangira Rwabutwagu, a district councilor representing central Division Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality.

The motion was passed during the council meeting chaired by Deputy Speaker Annet Kenyina Tibamanya. 

The motion was seconded by Adnan Tumuhairwe, the Kakanju sub-County LC V councilor, Silagi Banyanga, the Ishaka Division councilor, and district youth councilor, Nancy Ainemukama.

During the presentation of the motion, Rwabutwagu highlighted the negative implications of homosexuality on human health, including the acquisition of chronic diseases such as cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, high blood pressure, and asthma.  

He also expressed concerns that the LGBTQ community is out to impose their ways of life on people, especially targeting young people, including school-going children in the district. Lauben Mugarura, the representative of Kyabugimbi Town Council, referred to the sin of homosexuality in the Bible, citing Genesis chapter 19, and pleaded that such acts should not be allowed in the district again. Boaz Kyaruzi, the Workers’ representative, emphasized the need for district leaders to enforce laws against homosexuality.   

Edward Mpabwa Mpeirwe, the representative of Kyamuhunga Sub County, reported that the district Chief Administrative Officer tasked and trusted the inspectorate departments of both Education and Health to investigate schools and close those that do not have enough space to accommodate students.   

After several deliberations, the councilors requested the RDC as Chairman district security committee to investigate and deploy personnel keen on the matter.   

The council approved the motion unanimously. In related news, Parliament passed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2023, last week, which proposes 20 years in jail for anyone engaging in acts of homosexuality and the death penalty for aggravated homosexuality. 

The Bill that was passed by Parliament on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, now awaits Presidential assent before it becomes law.
