Two children killed by rock slide in Kajjansi Stone Quarry

The territorial police at Katwe are investigating the death of two children following a rock slide that occurred on Wednesday, February 8th, 2023, at the Kibiri A zone in the Busabala ward, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality in Wakiso District.

The deceased have been identified as Okecho Emurani, aged 13, and Balaka, aged 11.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire Deputy PRO KMP, the juveniles were loading soil onto an unidentified motor vehicle tipper when the rock slide occurred.

The driver of the vehicle drove off the scene immediately after the incident and police are currently searching for him and the other suspects who hired the children.

Three years ago, the Uganda National Roads Authority restricted access to the quarry and has been impounding any vehicles that enter the site illegally.

The bodies of the deceased have been retrieved and taken to the City Mortuary in Mulago for a post-mortem examination.

“The police are advising the public to stay away from the quarry which has been deemed unstable, and are working to sensitize the community about the dangers of child labour,” says Owoyesigyire.
