9 confirmed dead in Buikwe accident as police search for survivors
The police in Buikwe District are struggling to rescue victims who are stuck under a pile of oranges following an accident that occurred in the early morning of January 3, 2024 around 1:00 am in Bulyantente near the flyover along the Kampala-Jinja highway.
By press time, three people had been rescued and rushed to Kawolo hospital for medical attention.
Meanwhile, SP Butoto Hellen the Police PRO Ssezibwa Region says 9 bodies were retrieved from the pile, and only two of these have been identified. All bodies were conveyed to Kawolo hospital mortuary for postmortem.
The incident involved a single vehicle, a white Mitsubishi Fuso truck Reg No UBN 533T with an unidentified driver.
According to preliminary reports, the truck was coming from Jinja to Kampala, loaded with both passengers and sacks of oranges covered with a tarpaulin.
The vehicle lost control, overturned and left the passengers buried under the spilled sacks of oranges.
The truck has been impounded at Lugazi CPS as authorities search for the driver.
