79 Arrested During Presidential Nomination Exercise

79 people were arrested during the two-day presidential nomination exercise, held on September 23–24, 2025, at the Electoral Commission offices in Lubowa, Kajjansi Town Council. According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SSP Patrick Onyango, the exercise was conducted peacefully under tight security, with only minor incidents reported.Onyango noted that a total of 79 suspects were arrested during the process. On the first day, 44 suspects were apprehended at President Yoweri Museveni’s rally in Kololo for phone snatching and pickpocketing. They are currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station pending prosecution.The second day saw 35 people arrested in Kajjansi for disobeying security guidelines. Among them was Hon. Allan Ssewanyana, the Member of Parliament for Makindye West, who, along with others, was later released on police bond. Some supporters of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi were also arrested for reckless riding and assault, prompting police to impound two vehicles and 40 motorcycles.Despite these incidents, police described the nomination exercise as successful, noting that order was maintained and no serious security breaches were recorded.
