4-Year-Old Pupil Swept Away by Floodwaters on His Way Home from School
Police in Mityana District are investigating the drowning of a four-year-old pupil who was swept away by running water during Monday’s evening downpour.
The deceased has been identified as Mutagwanya Angello Darius, a pupil at Cosna Primary School and resident of Butega Village, Kabuwambo Ward, Ttamu Division, Mityana Municipality.
According to preliminary police findings, the tragic incident occurred on October 20, 2025, at around 5:00 p.m. as the child was returning home from school. Heavy rain began to fall, and Darius continued his journey despite the storm. When he reached a makeshift wooden bridge, he found it submerged by fast-flowing water.
The Wamala Region Police Spokesperson, SP Racheal Kawala told reporters that the young boy reportedly attempted to cross the bridge but was swept away by the current into a nearby trench. His body was later found about 50 meters away after the rain had subsided.
Police responded to the incident, and a postmortem examination was conducted before the body was handed over to the family for burial.
SP Kawala urged parents, schools, and the general public to take extra precautions during heavy rains to prevent similar tragedies.
“We urge the public to take precautionary measures during heavy rains and avoid unnecessary movements during downpours. Schools must also ensure the safety of children, especially during extreme weather conditions,” SP Kawala said.
