29 NUP Supporters Arrested for Blocking Mityana Highway During Kyagulanyi Rally
Police have arrested 29 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for allegedly blocking the Mityana highway and disrupting traffic ahead of a planned campaign rally by presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango, Kyagulanyi, who was scheduled to hold a presidential rally in Mityana District today, had been expected to travel via the Mityana highway but instead opted to use the Hoima Road route.
A joint security deployment was arranged to facilitate the candidate’s movement and ensure public order. However, at Bujjuko Trading Centre along the Mityana highway, a group of NUP supporters reportedly gathered, drumming, whistling, and blocking the road, causing a disruption to traffic flow and inciting unrest.
“Security personnel issued several warnings, but the group persisted,” SSP Onyango said. “As a result, about 29 suspects were arrested and are currently being held at Wakiso Police Division.”
Police have urged all presidential candidates and their supporters to comply with traffic regulations, follow approved route plans, and respect the rights of other road users during campaign activities.
“We remind all candidates to conduct their campaigns peacefully and in accordance with the law,” Onyango added.
