Taxi driver buried alive by sand in a mine

Police in Luweero are investigating circumstances under which a 25-year-old taxi operator from Kampala was buried alive by falling sand in a mine.

The unfortunate incident occurred at Kisanga village, Kibirizi Parish in Bamunanika Sub-County on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Richard Magunda.

According to Robert Kavuma the Kisanga village LC 1, the deceased was working in the taxi business in Kampala before the lockdown.

However, after the second lockdown was announced by President Yoweri Museveni about three weeks ago with a ban on public transport, Magunda became jobless so he relocated from Kampala back to Luweero, his home village.

The deceased had started engaging in any casual business he could find for survival and recently started mining sand only now to be buried by falling soil. His fate was sealed after he dug deep under an anthill above which collapsed.

The deceased’s colleagues who were also digging in the same mine but meters away, rushed to report the incident to the chairman and other rescuers, but by the time they came, Magunda had died.

They notified Bamunanika police that has since launched investigations.
